WiPS. Shame, violence and the stigma machine: Reckoning with the ethics of forensic psychiatry, Piyush Pushkar, 19 December

We warmly invite you to the next ENPA Works-in-Progress Seminar (WiPS)* on Thursday, the 19th of December at 5PM CET via Zoom.

We are delighted to introduce this month’s presenter, Piyush Pushkar from University of Manchester, who will share his work-in-progress titled:

Shame, violence and the stigma machine: Reckoning with the ethics of forensic psychiatry

Forensic psychiatry, focused on individual perpetrators, often overlooks the structural causes of violence, thus facilitating the carceral apparatus’s disproportionate targeting of marginalized groups. Drawing on James Gilligan and Frantz Fanon, this paper critiques forensic psychiatry’s narrow scope. Gilligan attributes violence to shame but ignores societal structures perpetuating shame. His model prioritizes individual interventions for reducing violence. Fanon, however, views violence as a means to reclaim dignity and overcome oppression, albeit recognising that violence breeds more violence and more psychic distress. I explore how Fanon’s sociogenic approach may help to reconcile Gilligan’s insights on shame with Fanon’s ambivalence regarding the disalienating potential of collective resistance.

We hope to see many of you on Thursday, December 19th and look forward to the lively discussion.

We are also pleased to share the full WiPS program, where you can see the other exciting presentations coming up next term.
